The reasons for prenatal diagnostic procedures are:

  • Non-invasive prenatal tests shows high risk for chromosomal abnormalities;
  • Women older than 35 years of age;
  • Have previously had a child or pregnancy with malformation or chromosomal abnormalities;
  • Family history of chromosomal abnormalities or birth defect.

Chorionic villus biopsy (CVS)

CVS performs in pregnancy week 10-13. Chorionic villi is placental tissue that contains information about the baby’s genes. The risk for pregnancy loss associated with CVS is less than 1 %. The results from the laboratory are obtained after 48 h.

Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is procedure when small amount of amniotic fluid takes from the uterus for genetic testing. The results are obtained after 10-12 days. The procedure may be also used for fetal lung test and the diagnosis of fetal infection. The risk for pregnancy loss is less than 0.5 %.

Cordocentesis

Cordocentesis or percutaneous umbilical blood sampling is procedure in which blood sample is taken from the umbilical cord for genetic testing and for detection ant treatment of some blood conditions. The procedure performs after pregnancy week 22 and the results from genetic laboratory are obtained after 3-4 days. The risk for pregnancy loss is 1.1%.
