Insemination
Insemination in Gyn-Fertility Clinic Milenković
The goal of this precise approach is to increase the chances of pregnancy.
Only a small part of the spermatozoa during sexual intercourse reaches the egg cell, but with the intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure, this potential is maximized.
The chance of pregnancy after insemination is 10-20%, depending on several factors, including the age of the woman, the duration of infertility, the quality of the semen and the cause of infertility.
When is insemination performed?
Insemination is performed when, after the infertility test, it is diagnosed:
- unexplained infertility - examination does not reveal the cause);
- male infertility with a slight deviation in the number and mobility of spermatozoa;
- endometriosis (mild form);
- sexual dysfunction: erectile and ejaculation disorders, vaginismus and painful sexual intercourses;
- insemination with donor semen;
- social factor (when couples are not able to have intercourse during ovulation).
Insemination procedure:
Before insemination, it is necessary to perform a fallopian tube patency test. This test can be done under the control of an x-ray machine - HSG, short for hystero-salpingo-graphy, or under the control of an ultrasound machine -HyCoSy, short for hystero-salpingo-sonography.
It is also necessary to swab the cervix for chlamydia and gonococcus.
Insemination is performed at the time of ovulation and can be done in:
- in a spontaneous cycle, that is without medication;
- in a stimulated cycle when the patient takes clomiphene or letrozole tablets from the third to the seventh day of the cycle.
The day of ovulation is determined with the help of ultrasound examinations and determination of the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) from blood or urine.
On the day of insemination, the partner provides a semen sample about 1.5-2 hours before the planned insemination.
Insemination is done by inserting a processed semen sample with progressively moving spermatozoa into the uterine cavity with a special catheter for insemination.
Insemination is performed on the gynecological table and the whole procedure takes 5-10 minutes.
The patient is discharged 30-45 minutes after the insemination.
The results are not better if the patient lies down for several hours after insemination. Whether the patient will receive progesterone therapy is an individual assessment.
The patient can return to daily activities immediately after insemination.
Pregnancy test is performed on the 14th day after insemination.
Expert advice: frequently asked questions
Answers by Milan Milenković, MD, PhD
How successful is insemination?
The chance of pregnancy after insemination is 10-15%, and it depends on several factors: the age of the woman, the length of infertility, the quality of the sperm and the cause of infertility.
When can I find out if I am pregnant after insemination?
12-14 days after insemination, a pregnancy test is performed, that is, then the hormone produced during pregnancy can be detected - beta choriogonadotropin (beta HCG).
Is insemination painful?
Insemination is not a painful procedure. Sometimes the speculum, an instrument that is inserted into the vagina, can cause an unpleasant sensation, and mild cramps that can last for several hours occur rarely.
The catheter used for insemination is soft and thin, so that rarely it can cause an unpleasant sensation and slight bleeding.
What is the difference between intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF)?
Insemination is a method where previously prepared spermatozoa are inserted into the uterine cavity with a special catheter at the time of ovulation, that is, when the egg cell is expected to be released from the ovary. This makes it possible for the egg cell and spermatozoa to "meet" and for fertilization of the egg cell to occur.
When IVF is performed, the ovaries are stimulated with hormones to produce more egg cells, then under ultrasound control, they are "removed" from the follicles in the ovaries, fertilized in the laboratory with the partner's or donor's spermatozoa, and then the fertilized egg cell, that is, the embryo, is returned to the uterine cavity.
How much does insemination cost?
For the price of insemination - see our price list which is updated regularly.
What is the optimal sperm concentration required for insemination?
The seminal fluid is processed in the laboratory before insemination and it is necessary to insert a minimum of 3 million progressively mobile spermatozoa into the uterine cavity.
How should I behave after insemination?
After insemination, you can immediately return to your daily activities. It has not been proven that refraining or saving from work improves the chance of pregnancy.
Do vitamins and nutritional supplements increase the chance of pregnancy after insemination?
There is no evidence that vitamins and supplements increase the chance of pregnancy after insemination.
